A friend of mine at St. Mary’s Harrogate has been reading a book called ‘Irrationality’ which is a study of how people in senior leadership positions in all walks of life are prone to make important decisions based on poorly founded assumptions and prejudices rather than a sober analysis of factual evidence.
I have just watched the 5 minutes with Richard Dawkins interview and it struck me that he would be a good case study.
There is very strong evidence concerning the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. We have detailed and corroborated eye witness accounts of these events which would be counted as overwhelming evidence in any court of law. Moreover the truth concerning these things prevailed in a political and religious environment which was actively hostile toward those who believed them.
In addition there are the accounts of the millions who have had direct experience of the person and work of the risen Christ since those times.
All of this is without taking into account the evidence of the works of God that have been documented from old testament times where also there are detailed and corroborated accounts.
There are also precise and detailed prophecies which have had well documented fulfillment.
The quality and quantity of all of this evidence is overwhelming.
Against this there is the widespread assumption that the theory of evolution is a proven fact. I imagine that Dawkins believes this to be the case.
No one has ever witnessed the evolution of a species.
Darwin believed that the proof of his theory would be found in the fossil evidence.
For the theory to be correct the evidence should be overwhelming.
What is striking is that there is practically none at all!
    Think again Mr Dawkins.

The comments from Mr Waterman are why neither side will ever backdown. I believe that Mr Waterman should also take some of his own advice. I can guarantee that Mr Dawkins has read and studied the Bible, as well as many over religious texts from different faiths (the very fact that there are different faiths should alarm you, if you were born in Turkey you would be Muslim, not Christian, and be worshipping Allah).

Mr Waterman has clearly not read up on the wealth of factual evidence concerning evolution, and is not able to open up his mind in order to attempt to understand what is a very simple concept. He says “No one has ever witnessed the evolution of a species”, evolution on a basic level is the passing of genes. We can see evolution happening all around us, a tall child from tall parents is not an accident, but the passing of a strong survival attribute from one gereration to the other. Who knows were this could lead over thousands of years.

If Mr Waterman would open his eyes to the many natural wonders of the world, he would find that there is far greater pleasure in trying to understand them, rather than blindly accepting that they were produced by a higher power.

John Waterman, you’ve just said that there is practically no evidence to back up the theory of evolution. You might like to know that Dawkins has just published a new book – “The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution”. Might be interesting for you to pick up a copy.
